Learning a new language follows a certain pattern of skill building similar to first language development. Within a child’s first year of English immersion, students quickly adapt classroom routines and are able to participate in conversations and socialize with their peers. More complex academic language takes five to seven years to acquire the academic aspects of English to a similar standard as their native-speaking peers.
The ELL department supports students through the various stages of English Language Acquisition. The program prioritizes support to students who are newest to the English Language and employs various instructional models throughout each phase of language acquisition.
